BACKGROUND
- Estreich, 47, of Dix Hills, is a registered Democrat and is running on the Democratic party line in the general election. He resigned in February as an attorney at the Department of Homeland Security.
- He is a major in the Army Reserves, where he serves as a headquarters company commander. Estreich is a former Suffolk County prosecutor and investigative attorney for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority inspector general. He runs a Huntington-based law firm focused on immigration and criminal law.
- Estreich graduated Phi Beta Kappa from SUNY Albany and with honors from the University of Texas School of Law. He clerked for a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals and also served as an associate counsel to the governor and as a lawyer at a large law firm.
ISSUES
- If elected, Estreich said he would act as an independent watchdog who would fight corruption and scrutinize county and town spending. He said he would advocate for stronger contracting rules, vendor vetting, conflict-of-interest safeguards and payment controls.
- He said he wants to launch targeted audits against waste, fraud and inefficiencies and recover every dollar possible.
- Estreich said he would work to ensure taxpayers have a real-time online dashboard showing how their taxes are spent. He said that would help county officials focus on the cost of living and help keep seniors in their homes and young families on Long Island.
