Rothwell, 55, of Wading River, is a registered Republican and is running on the Republican and Conservative party lines in the general election.
He has been a town council member for 5 1/2 years. He has been a volunteer firefighter and EMT in Wading River for three years, and before that volunteered in Southampton for 20 years, where his business was located. He owns a monument company and three funeral homes across the East End.
Rothwell has an associate’s degree in architecture from SUNY Delhi and an associate’s degree in mortuary science from Nassau Community College.

Rothwell said that if elected he would work to make the town’s tax base stronger to reduce taxpayer burden. He said it’s important that Riverhead not break the tax cap and but maintain services in a more affordable way.
He said he would work to develop high-paying jobs at the Enterprise Park at Calverton. Developers should bear any development burdens, Rothwell said. He said he would work to end lawsuits with the Suffolk County Water Authority over treatment of wastewater generated by the county jail, court complex and county center.
Rothwell said he would work with Brookhaven Town representatives to move forward on pollution cleanup at the Wading River Duck Pond.
