BACKGROUND
- Moore, 66, of Westhampton Beach, is a registered Democrat and is running on the Democratic and Conservative party lines in the general election. She is seeking her third term as Southampton supervisor.
- She was mayor of Westhampton Beach Village for 10 years and an attorney for a bank in Manhattan for 20 years before opening her own practice in Westhampton Beach. For 15 years, Moore coordinated volunteers for the homeless outreach program that Maureen’s Haven operates at the Westhampton Presbyterian Church.
- Moore received a bachelor’s degree in legal studies from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and graduated cum laude from Syracuse University’s College of Law.
ISSUES
- Moore said that if reelected she would continue to improve infrastructure and water quality, noting use of Community Preservation Fund money for grants to homeowners installing IA septic systems and using a combination of grant monies to build the Riverside Sewer District wastewater treatment plant, which is expected to be online by 2030.
- She said she would use Community Preservation Fund dollars to conserve and acquire open space and noted the town’s land use disturbance legislation passed in May that prohibits clearcutting of undeveloped properties without prior building department signoff, a move to prevent over-clearing and help protect water quality and the environment.
- Moore said she would work with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority “to get more trains out here to get cars off the road” and look at ways to build affordable housing east of the Shinnecock Canal. The town enacted affordable housing overlay districts and is using funds from the Community Housing Fund to help qualified first-time homebuyers get up to $171,000 toward their new home.
