BACKGROUND:
- Solages, 44, of Elmont, was elected to the Legislature in 2011. In 2022, he ran unsuccessfully in the Democratic primary for Congress in New York’s Fourth Congressional District.
- He is a graduate of Georgetown University, where he earned a bachelor’s in international history. He is a graduate of Boston College Law School.
- He is a former Bronx assistant district attorney. He was commissioner of the Nassau Commission on Human Rights when Tom Suozzi was county executive.
ISSUES:
- Solages said he was one of three Democratic legislators in 2021 to oppose then-Democratic County Executive Laura Curran’s police reform proposal. He and other legislators said the plan did not provide enough accountability for officers.
- On traffic safety, he touted efforts to secure funding for projects in his district, including Elmont and Valley Stream. He said he would work to improve parks and build a community center.
- On law enforcement, he said he would advocate for additional resources to the county Auxiliary Police. He also said he would secure funding to improve training and continuing education for law enforcement officers.
