The Democrats' potent feminist fundraising arm, EMILY's List, on Tuesday endorsed Southampton Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst's bid for Congress against freshman Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley).

"Anna Throne-Holst is a committed public servant who is about getting things done for Long Island women and families to have fair shot," said Stephanie Schriock, EMILY's List president.

Throne-Holst, 55, of Sag Harbor, who has decided to forgo re-election as supervisor, is the third House candidate nationwide that EMILY's List has decided to support in the 2016 election. The organization has already announced its support for incumbent Rep. Gwen Graham, a Florida Democratic, and Monica Vernon, a Democratic challenger in Iowa.

Even before announcing support for Throne-Holst, EMILY's List had target Zeldin because of his support for partially privatizing Social Security, opposing raising the minimum wage, and co-sponsoring anti-abortion legislation.

Venture capitalist David Calone, chairman of the Suffolk Planning Commission, also is seeking the Democratic nomination in the 1st Congressional District race.

EMILY's List, with more than three million members nationwide, backs women candidates, family issues and abortion rights. The group spent nearly $45 million last year.
