EMILY’S List, a powerful fundraising political action committee for Democratic women candidates, has endorsed North Hempstead Town Board member Anna Kaplan in the five-way Democratic primary for retiring Rep. Steve Israel’s Third District seat.

“Anna knows how important it is to protect the rights of immigrants and stand up to the anti-immigrant rhetoric of Donald Trump,” said Stephanie Schriock, EMILY’S List president.

Schriock said the group “ . . . is proud to endorse Anna in her historic bid to be the first Iranian-American in Congress.”

Kaplan came to the United States as a Jewish refugee from Iran at age 13.

Schriock also called Kaplan, a town official elected in 2011, “a dedicated public servant focused on expanding economic opportunities for women and families, and protecting women’s access to health care.”

EMILY’S List has 3 million members nationwide. Since 1985, the group has raised more than $400 million to support Democratic women who back abortion rights.
