Federal Judge Denis Hurley won’t delay Nassau judgment

A federal judge has denied Nassau’s request for more time to deposit a $11.5 million judgment with the court clerk to pay claims of inmates who were unlawfully strip-searched upon admission to the county jail between 1996 and 1999.
Denying the county’s request to extend the deadline from Aug. 15 until the end of September, U.S. District Court Judge Denis Hurley Friday noted that Nassau has delayed depositing the money since he found in favor of the inmate’s class-action suit two years ago.
Hurley warned that if Nassau misses Monday’s deadline, “the court will entertain an application for per diem monetary sanctions against the County.”
