Former Gov. George Pataki formally endorsed Ohio Gov. John Kasich for president Thursday night before a $1,000-a-head New York State Republican fundraiser in midtown Manhattan.

Pataki, who dropped his own White House bid last December, predicted that if nominated, Kasich “doesn’t just beat Hillary Clinton, he trounces Hillary Clinton.”

“We need somebody who can bring Americans together. . . . Republicans, Democrats and independents,” Pataki said.

Kasich, who said he is gratified to receive Pataki’s support, trails real estate mogul Donald Trump and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in pledged delegates in national polls.

But Pataki said delegates at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this July will support Kasich because they “want to win with somebody who could make this country live to its potential for the next generation, and that’s John Kasich.”

Kasich’s campaign said Pataki will serve as the national co-chair of Kasich for America.
