Richard Iannuzzi, former president of New York State United Teachers, has been recommended to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for appointment to the Suffolk County Community College board of trustees.
Suffolk Democratic chairman Richard Schaffer acknowledged that he recommended the former union head for the unpaid post because his “wealth of experience would be a tremendous asset” to the board. Ianuzzi’s name has surfaced because Patchogue Mayor Paul Pontieri, 68, whose term as a gubernatorial appointee ran out June 30, has indicated he does not want another seven-year term.
Iannuzzi’s name had also been considered earlier for the seat held by Belinda Alvarez-Groneman, but Assemb. Phil Ramos pressed for a Hispanic appointee and Cuomo named Bergre Escorbores, a Brentwood school administrator and treasurer of the Islip Democratic committee.
