The Bronx has the lowest percentage of Republican voters of any county in New York State. Kings County (Brooklyn) has the second lowest.

So why would a GOP presidential candidate, like Republican Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), campaign there before the April 19 New York primary? Because he can win a congressional district — and its delegates — with relatively few votes.

In 2012, Mitt Romney won the Bronx congressional district held by Rep. Jose Serrano (D-Bronx) with just 151 votes. Romney won another in Brooklyn by getting 351 votes.

Of course, 2012 turnout was dismal in part because Romney was seen as all but clinching the GOP nomination. With turnout expected to be high this time around, it might take Cruz, or Republicans John Kasich and Donald Trump a few more votes this time.
