In the race for Hempstead supervisor, Gary Port, opposing incumbent Kate Murray (website here), issues this missive:

New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli recently announced that his office is preparing to audit the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter's (TOHAS) financial operations. The audit, in response to recent media reports and thousands of letters to the comptroller outlining the abuse of animals and taxpayers, has advocates cheering.

"With the recent media reports raising concerns about financial irregularities within the shelter from outrageous six figure salaries to skyrocketing administrative costs - Comptroller DiNapoli's audit is well warranted," stated Gary Port, Democratic Candidate for Hempstead Town Supervisor. However, the number one issue regarding the shelter must be the welfare of the animals. With widespread reports of animal abuse and neglect, we must continue to raise awareness about this shelter. As I have repeatedly said, the problems of the shelter can be solved quickly if the goal is to protect the animals. Unfortunately, under Kate Murray, the purpose of the shelter is to provide jobs to Republican cronies,"

Port, reiterated that when elected he will work with experts to turn the shelter into a no-kill shelter and save taxpayers money at the same time.
