ALBANY — More than 14,000 traffic tickets, including 218 for drunken driving, were issued in a Thanksgiving weekend crackdown by State Police.

Similar efforts have traditionally been held during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

From the Wednesday before Thanksgiving through Sunday, state police issued 5,910 tickets for speeding and 715 for distracted driving. More than 5,000 vehicles were stopped at “sobriety checkpoints,” Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced Thursday.

“New York has zero tolerance for impaired and reckless drivers who put themselves and others at risk,” Cuomo said. “I commend State Police for keeping these dangerous drivers off the roads and helping to prevent needless tragedies this holiday weekend.”
