Islip Democrats are talking to Brightwaters Mayor Joe McDermott about running for supervisor against recently appointed GOP incumbent Angie Carpenter.

McDermott, 47, was elected in June as village mayor after he served as a trustee for one year. He defeated Deputy Mayor Denise Gibson 481 to 423, an open seat because the the former mayor retired after 18 years in office.

In the village, candidates run under local party names. McDermott, a 12-year village resident, ran on the Unification Party line but is a registered Democrat. He is also an a member of Ironworkers Local 361.
