BACKGROUND:
- Martins, 55, of Old Westbury, was a state senator in the 7th District from 2011 through 2016. He previously served as Mineola mayor and ran unsuccessfully for Nassau County executive and Congress.
- He is running on the Republican and Conservative Party lines.
- Martins is a first-generation American whose parents emigrated from Portugal in the 1960s. Martins is a lawyer who graduated from St. John’s University School of Law and got his undergraduate degree from American University.
ISSUES:
- Martins has campaigned against the state's cashless bail system, arguing that the policy change has increased crime.
- He has called on the MTA to hold additional hearings on its congestion pricing plan for Manhattan-bound commuters.
- Martins said he will work to reduce gas prices statewide and reduce mandates and regulations on small businesses.
