WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden is praising his late mother as a fiercely protective woman and says courage was her greatest virtue.

The vice president delivered a eulogy Tuesday at his mother’s funeral Mass. The vice president says the 92-year-old Jean Finnegan Biden instilled in her children the loyalty of family.

The vice president’s mother died Friday after a brief illness. A crowd of about 700 people are gathering to remember her in the sanctuary at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Wilmington.

Guests include President Barack Obama, former President Bill Clinton and several Cabinet officials and members of Congress.

The president and first lady met privately with the Biden family before the funeral began.
