Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s closest confidante has been hired by Madison Square Garden.

Joe Percoco will take on the newly created title of senior vice president, effective Jan. 4, and will “develop and execute strategic business opportunities,” the company said in a news release.

The Dolan family owns a controlling interest in Madison Square Garden and Cablevision, which owns Newsday.

Percoco has long been one of Cuomo’s closest advisors, working for him when Cuomo was federal housing secretary in the Clinton administration.

Percoco worked as Cuomo’s campaign manager in some races and has been in Cuomo’s inner circle through his five years as governor and currently holds the title of executive deputy secretary. He’s been widely seen as a political enforcer and strategist by State Capitol insiders.

During the eulogy for former Gov. Mario Cuomo, Gov. Andrew Cuomo called Percoco “my father’s third son.”

The governor acknowledged in October that Percoco would be leaving soon.
