Former County Attorney John Ciampoli is back in Nassau, working as the $160,000-a-year counsel to the board of directors of Nassau University Medical Center.

Ciampoli, who had been counsel to the Republican-controlled State Senate in Albany, was appointed in September to fill the vacancy created after the the death of the hospital board’s former attorney, former District Court Judge Frank Doddato. Ciampoli “brings to this position a wide range of legal experience at the state and local level,” said NUMC spokeswoman Shelley Lotenberg.

Ciampoli, of Franklin Square, said he was offered the job because of his experience in health care legislation and other issues. “This gave me an opportunity to come home again and it contributes to the community,” he said.

County Executive Edward Mangano, a Republican, had appointed Ciampoli as county attorney when Mangano first took office in 2010. Mangano terminated Ciampoli without explanation in November 2013. Ciampoli, a longtime elections lawyer for the Senate, returned to Albany to advise then Majority Leader Dean Skelos and the senate majority. Skelos is appealing his 2015 conviction on federal corruption charges.
