Laura Curran missed Democratic election celebration for overseas trip
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran was not among the enthusiastic crowd of Democrats at the Garden City hotel on election night Tuesday as party loyalists celebrated the election of a Democratic-controlled state Senate.
While Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was there, glad-handing supporters, Curran was nowhere to be seen.
“The county executive is traveling with a group of rabbis to events marking the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht,” spokesman Michael Martino said the next day. “The itinerary is confidential at this time for security reasons. The trip is at no cost to the taxpayer.”
Martino initially declined to say who was paying for the trip.
In a news release Friday, the county press office said Curran went to Berlin, and her trip, "was supported through The Visitors Programme of the Federal Republic of Germany, which organizes trips for foreign leaders to experience Germany firsthand . . . "
