Lawyer: No wrongdoing by Paterson

Gov. David A. Paterson’s lawyer says the governor has done nothing wrong despite a report Friday that he helped draft what would have been a misleading public statement about a top aide’s domestic case.
Theodore Wells Jr. was responding to a report in The New York Times Friday that Paterson told his press secretary on Feb. 16 the key points to include in a press release about a dispute between David Johnson and his then-girlfriend Sherr-una Booker last Oct. 31, including that it was not violent. The newspaper says Booker refused to endorse the statement and told an intermediary it was a lie.
The governor’s office said instead the next day there was no independent evidence substantiating any claims of violence by Johnson.
A week later, Paterson suspended Johnson and requested an investigation.
