A new poll from Long Island University found Americans disapproved of President Donald Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey by a margin of 56 to 35 percent, although Republicans remained supportive of the move.

Democrats disapproved of the move by a 76 percent to 13 percent, while independents and unaffiliated voters disapproved of the firing by 56 to 37 percent.

Republicans however, approved of the decision, by a 69 to 23 percent margin.

The poll was conducted May 12 through 19 via SMS text, a departure from traditional telephone polling methods.

“In this poll, the respondents reflected their resolute disagreement with President Donald Trump to remove FBI Director James Comey,” LIU Political Science Prof. Stanley Klein said in a statement.

The national survey of 1465 registered voters aged 18 to 80 had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

The survey was done by the university’s Hornstein Center for Policy, Polling and Analysis.
