Businessman George Schwertl of Lloyd Harbor has emerged as the leading contender to take on Suffolk Legis. William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) this fall, according to Huntington GOP officials.

Toni Tepe, town GOP chairwoman, said Schwertl, one of several contenders, has been screened by both the Republican and Conservative Parties and expected to be screened by the Independence Party shortly. She said the party is trying to determine which contenders would fit best on the town or county ticket.

Schwertl, 50, an automotive industry manager, ran a close but losing race against three-term Lloyd Harbor mayor, the late Leland Hairr, in 2011. Tepe said he has vowed to run a :”strong race” if nominated. Spencer, a pediatric surgeon, has championed local laws banning sale of powdered caffeine to minors and raise the age for legal purchase of tobacco products from 19 to 21.
