Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas has allocated $1 million in asset forfeiture funds, collected by her office during criminal investigations, to help preserve funding for county youth programs that were targeted for cuts to help close a budget hole.
Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano had proposed suspending $4.1 million in payments to youth service agencies, including anti-gang and drug prevention programs, to help close a $36 million shortfall in the 2017 proposed budget.
But the final list of cuts offered by Mangano to the county’s fiscal control board spared the youth programs after Singas directed nearly all available funds from the DA’s Civil Forfeiture Bureau.
“The money will help provide essential programming that supports children and prevents crime,” said Singas spokeswoman Miriam Sholder.
The DA will separately take a $300,000 cut in budget expenses as part of the amended 2017 budget.
