BACKGROUND: Messina, 56, of Holbrook, is running on the Independence party line in the general election. He has been a partner since 2006 at the law firm Sinnreich, Kosakoff & Messina  in Central Islip, where he handles municipal issues. Since August, he has been a member of the Islip Town Zoning Board of Appeals. He was town attorney in Islip from 1993 to January 2006. He was also an assistant town attorney and deputy attorney in Islip for two years before that. Messina earned an associate degree from Suffolk County Community College in 1983, a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University in 1985, an American Bar Associate Lawyer’s Assistant Program certificate in 1986, and a law degree from Hofstra University law school 1989. He was admitted to the Connecticut and New York State bars in 1989 and the U.S. Court in the Eastern  and Southern districts. Messina is a member of the Second Judicial Department, the Appellate Division’s Committees on Character and Fitness; a member of the New York State Bar Association; and a member of the Suffolk County Bar Association. He currently serves as its treasurer and chair of the Legislative Review Committee.
