BACKGROUND: Huq, 70, of Elmont, a South Asian community organizer and retired physician, is a first-time political candidate. Huq was born and raised in Bangladesh where he attended Dhaka Medical College. He was a general physician in Bangladesh where he helped build a hospital and OB/GYN clinic. He later traveled to the United Kingdom and Ireland where he received training to become a general surgeon. Huq and his family emigrated to the United States in 2005 and he became a teacher in a program that helped new immigrants get jobs in the health care field.
ISSUES: Huq said his campaign is focused on a multitude of domestic issues, including improving the nation’s infrastructure, creating millions of new jobs, protecting women’s rights in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade and improving the country’s racial divide. Huq said he wants to pass new gun control legislation that would limit mass shootings. He’s also concerned about the threat to American democracy following the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and said too many people have lost faith in the government. Huq said he would increase access to COVID-19 vaccines in underserved communities to prevent rising infection rates.
