Nassau commissioner Lisa Murphy moving to Hempstead town post
Nassau’s Commissioner of Human Affairs Lisa Murphy is moving to Hempstead Town to be deputy commissioner in the town’s department of senior enrichment.
The Hempstead Town Board is expected to approve the appointment of Murphy, the daughter of former U.S. Sen. Alfonse D’Amato, on Tuesday to her new $141,000-a-year job. She earned $119,000 at the county, which she had worked for since 2010.
Town spokesman Michael Deery said Murphy’s “background and experience speak to the needs” of the department. He added that she is taking the place of two deputies who left.
Johanna Scarlata, the wife of former Oceanside Republican leader Michael Scarlata, remains the senior enrichment commissioner.
Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano announced last week in an email to employees that James Dolan, who has worked for Nassau since 1986 and has a doctorate in social welfare and a master’s degree in counseling, will take Murphy’s place as acting commissioner of human services. Dolan most recently had served as director of chemical dependency services.
Mangano wrote of Murphy, “We collectively thank her for her distinguished leadership and service to our great county.”
