Nassau Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs is advising members of his county committee to show up and vote Tuesday.

Nassau County Democratic committeemen are tasked with circulating petitions for political candidates and helping get them on the ballot. So, it would seem to go without saying that committeemen should be counted on as surefire votes for party-backed candidates.

But a memo circulated last week by Jay Jacobs, the party's county chairman, notes that only 62 percent of his roughly 1,600 committeemen voted in 2013's off-year election.

"The numbers are disappointing and I wanted to bring attention to that," Jacobs said in an interview. "They are leaving the responsibility to someone else and that's wrong."

Jacobs enclosed an absentee ballot in his memo and pressed his committeemen -- who were elected to a new two-year term last month -- to vote in Tuesday's election, in which the district attorney, all three town supervisors and 19 county legislative seats are on the ballot.

A spokesman for Nassau Republicans said they do not track the voting records of their committeemen.
