Nassau Democrats have officially submitted their redistricting map to the county legislature – a plan that keeps all 19 districts largely the same while making minor adjustments for population change.

The map, which faces an uphill battle in the GOP-controlled legislature, was submitted as a local law on Jan. 29.

The bill is being reviewed by the Republican majority but has yet to be placed on the calendar for a vote, said GOP legislative spokesman Matt Fernando. Democrats have asked that their map be the subject of multiple public hearings.

An alternative map, proposed by Republican members of the Nassau Temporary Districting Advisory Commission, appears to pit several incumbent lawmakers, including Democratic and GOP members, against one another.

The Republican-majority can accept the commission map, revise it or adopt a completely new map by the charter-set deadline of March 5

Fernando said the GOP majority has yet to submit their redistricting proposal to the legislature.
