Nassau sales tax renewal still unresolved in Assembly
The fight over Nassau County sales tax revenues is going down to the wire.
The state Assembly left Albany Friday without acting on bills to renew the county's authorization to collect sales taxes, which is worth more than $300 million in annual revenue. As of now, the state Legislature is scheduled to return to the Albany for just one more day of work, Tuesday.
Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, a Republican, favors a straightforward renewal with no strings attached. Assemb. Earlene Hooper (D-Hempstead) wants renewal conditioned on the county directing $2.5 million to Hempstead and $2 million to Freeport, two struggling villages in her district.
