Nassau's Sheriff's Correction Officers Benevolent Association became the first county labor union to endorse a county executive candidate, backing Democrat Thomas Suozzi. Union president John Jaronczyk, whose group stayed neutral four years ago, said: "Suozzi has a vision for the county and for how to get us out of this fiscal mess."

"These brave men and women put their lives at risk daily," Suozzi said, vowing to work with the union. Jaronczyk said the group couldn't support GOP Executive Edward Mangano after he laid off 400 employees in 2011 and tried to pass a bill last year allowing him to alter closed collective bargaining agreements.
