William Muller has stepped down as clerk of the Nassau County Legislature to become Town of Hempstead counsel under its new supervisor, Anthony Santino.

Muller called it “an exciting opportunity.” The $160,000 salary marks a boost from the $130,900 paid by the county post, which he held for more than six years.

The legislative clerk polls lawmakers to determine the outcome of votes and keeps minutes of meetings. Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves (R-East Meadow) said she’s working with County Attorney Carnell Foskey on a successor to be approved by the legislature. Sources said the GOP is eyeing Michael Pulitzer, leader of the Great Neck-Lake Success Republican Club.
