It’s been tough to get an interview with Nassau County Legislature Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves (R-East Meadow) to ask her about the holdup on the nomination of Thomas Krumpter, now acting commissioner, to become county police commissioner. The legislature would have to vote on the nomination.

Gonsalves’ staff said she wasn’t available to talk, and offered up her deputy. But I was able to get Gonsalves’ cellphone number. This is how the call went on Wednesday evening:

Reporter: “Hi, Presiding Officer Gonsalves, this is Nicole Fuller calling from Newsday, how are you?”

Gonsalves: “She’s not here!”

Reporter: “This is Norma, right? Norma Gonsalves?”

Gonsalves: “Uh, no, it’s not.”

Reporter: “It sounds like you, Mrs. Presiding Officer.”

Gonsalves: (laughs)

Reporter: “I just wanted to ask you about Commissioner Krumpter.”

Gonsalves: “What about him?”

Gonsalves proceeded to answer a few questions about the Republican caucus’ feelings on the nomination and the five-month delay on a vote, before saying she had to go: “I’m right in the middle of preparing dinner for my family.”
