Former NuHealth official charged with misconduct ended up not working for Suffolk

Suffolk officials privately breathed a sigh of relief last week after learning Nassaus former executive vice president of NuHealth, Larry Slatky, was charged with official misconduct.

The Bellone administration in March sought a waiver to hire Slatky as a consultant for up to $50,000 to help the county negotiate with Hudson River HealthCare, a nonprofit group taking over the countys network of health centers. At the time, Slatky was slated to get $300 an hour, plus travel expenses. But that ended up not happening.

Slatky headed operations for NuHealth, a $545 million public benefit corporation that runs Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, A. Holly Patterson Extended Health Care Facility in Uniondale and several county health centers. He has pleaded not guilty, and his attorney says charges will not stand up.

In Suffolk, while the executive-legislative committee approved the waiver, Deputy County Executive Jon Schneider said Slatky never did any work for the county -- and county health officials completed the negotiations on their own.
