President Barack Obama and a bipartisan congressional delegation from the tri-state area will attend the 10th anniversary of 9/11 at the World Trade Center site in Manhattan, a congressional aide said Friday.
But House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) won't be there, and has made no public announcement of his schedule for Sept. 11, spokesman Michael Steel said in an email Friday.
Instead, Boehner will lead a congressional delegation to Shanksville, Pa., on Sept. 10 for the dedication of the Flight 93 National Memorial, where a jet crashed after passengers are believed to have risen up against al-Qaida hijackers.
Other House members will attend a ceremony at the Pentagon, Steel said.
At the urging of Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford), Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan) and Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-Manhattan), Boehner sent a letter on Aug. 18 inviting members of Congress from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut to the New York City ceremony.
"At the Capitol and all three 9/11 memorial sites, members of the House will stand together in solidarity to reaffirm our commitment to 'never forget,' " Boehner said in a statement.
