On Thursday morning, just as Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano was surrendering to federal authorities at his Bethpage home on corruption and bribery charges, his fundraising committee sent an ill-timed email to supporters.

The solicitation, from “Friends of Ed Mangano,” invited donors to “join us for a breakfast to support” Mangano. Supporters were asked to pay $100 to share “Eggs with Ed” on Nov. 5 at B.K. Sweeney’s Parkside Tavern in Bethpage.

A source said the invitation’s release was scheduled before the arrest. Mangano spokesman Brian Nevin declined to comment on whether the event has since been canceled.

Mangano has declined to say whether he would run for a third term in 2017, although many political experts said the criminal charges could make a re-election campaign near impossible.

Among the Democrats mulling a run for county executive are County Comptroller George Maragos, Long Beach City Manager Jack Schnirman and Legis. Laura Curran (D-Baldwin).
