Rangel's primary challengers make their own headlines
As the future dimmed Friday for U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel, and President Barack Obama urged he "end his career with dignity," Rangel's primary challengers gained attention. Jonathan Tasini, who quit his run against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand to seek the 15th C.D. seat, drew fire in May from state Democratic chairman Jay Jacobs for warning Rangel's misdeeds could cost Democratic seats in the House.
"He should be careful about attacking fellow Democrats who have served their communities well for many years," Jacobs said.
Another candidate, Assemb. Adam Clayton Powell IV also demanded Rangel quit. But election officials said Rangel's name goes on the Sept. 14 primary ballot regardless, since the deadline to decline designations was July 19.
