Redistricting meet to discuss prisoners
The state redistricting caravan this week visits Queens, where prisoners are likely to be a key topic.
The Legislative Task Force on Demographic Research and Reapportionment, charged with drawing district lines for the State Legislature and Congress, meets at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Queens Borough Hall. Last year, the Legislature changed the law, as it regards the census, to count prisoners at their last residence.
Previously, inmates were counted where incarcerated -- which greatly benefited upstate Republicans. The panel might soon unveil exactly how the change affects the upstate-downstate balance.
