The long-stalled Suffolk district attorney’s investigation into whether Babylon Democratic chairman Robert Stricoff took as much as $120,000 in unauthorized raises and personal expenses has moved to the state Board of Elections.

Rich Schaffer, Suffolk Democratic chairman, said party attorney Joseph Conway has confirmed the state Board of Elections enforcement bureau has taken over the probe. Party officials have offered to have party accountant Michael Norman meet with state officials, Schaffer said.

Schaffer brought the findings of a party audit to District Attorney Thomas Spota in September 2014, just before Stricoff, a close ally of County Executive Steve Bellone, was to take a $155,000-a-year job as executive director of the Suffolk Industrial Development Agency. Stricoff later withdrew his name.

John Carman, Stricoff’s attorney, said he “only heard a rumor, nothing official” about the switch to the board of elections. “We’re not concerned about anyone, anywhere looking at Bob’s conduct. Any objective analysis of his conduct with the [town Democratic] committee, we welcome.”
