Sen. Chuck Schumer is at his lowest approval rating among New Yorkers in 15 years, according to a new poll from Quinnipiac University released Tuesday.

In a survey of 1,366 state residents from Sept. 10-15, 54 percent said they approved of the way the Democratic senator handled his position while 32 percent said they did not.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, also a Democrat, received an approval rating of 49 percent with 25 percent disapproving.

The latest numbers show Schumer at his lowest approval since May 2000, when 52 percent of those surveyed approved of his leadership and 18 percent did not.

However, the decline in approval ratings hasn't translated into disagreement with Schumer among voters on major issues, the poll found.

About 59 percent of those surveyed said they, like Schumer, disagreed with the Iran nuclear deal. That position led 24 percent to say they would be more likely to vote for him in the next election, while 17 percent said it would make their support less likely. More than half of respondents said it would not sway their votes.

Those surveyed also seemed to support another term for Schumer, with 56 percent saying he deserved to be re-elected -- versus 34 percent who said he did not -- and 61 percent said that a Schumer re-election would be good for New York.

"The poll shows Sen. Schumer is in a very strong position across the state," Angelo Roefaro, a spokesman for Schumer, said in a statement. "Sen. Schumer remains focused on doing his job: working hard and delivering results for New Yorkers."

The poll's margin of error was plus-or-minus 2.7 percentage points.
