Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has several options on how to fill the seat, according to state Board of Elections officials:
Leave it vacant until Election Day.
In this scenario, both parties would have primaries on Sept. 13 to select candidates for the Nov. 1 general election.
Call quickly for a special election.
Party leaders from Queens and Brooklyn, where the 9th Congressional District is located, would designate candidates, according to State Board of Elections spokesman John Conklin. The election must occur 70 to 80 days after the governor calls for it, putting it in late August or early September.
Time the special election to occur on Primary Day.
This would be cheaper than calling a special election outright.
Cuomo's aides say he is expected to call a special election on primary or election day.The winner will fill out only the final year of Weiner's term and would be required to run for re-election in 2012.
Democrats: Queens City Councilman Mark Weprin, and former Council members Melinda Katz and Eric Gioia; Assemb. Rory Lancman.
Republicans: Bob Turner and New York State Civil Court Judge Noach Dear, both of whom ran against Weiner; Councilman Eric Ulrich.
