The former governor's spokeswoman, Linda Linden, tells The New York Times that Spitzer was disappointed that his application for membership to the Manhattan club was rejected. She noted that the school had asked him to speak last year and that Spitzer donates money to Harvard.

The club has declined to comment.

Spitzer graduated from Harvard Law School in 1984. He resigned as governor in 2008 amid a prostitution scandal. This month, he joined CNN as a regular commentator.

The Harvard Club has more than 11,000 members. Membership is open to alumni and others with ties to the university. They must undergo an interview with an admissions committee.
