BACKGROUND:
- Warshaw, 45, was born in New York City and resides in Manhattan. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history and government from Cornell University and an MBA from Columbia Business School.
- He worked at the Center for American Progress before becoming an aide to former Gov. Eliot Spitzer. He also worked at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He later led companies developing solar power and affordable housing.
- Warshaw has never held elected office.
ISSUES:
- Warshaw said he will use the state pension fund to invest in a $20 billion affordable housing fund, with the goal of building 200,000 homes.
- He said he wants to end the payments the state comptroller’s office makes to Wall Street fund managers and manage more of the pension fund’s investments in-house.
- Warshaw said he will also divest the state pension fund from fossil fuel companies, foreign bonds and companies such as Palantir that have contracts with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
