Insurance man Steve Louro has become the first Republican to announce his interest in taking on Democratic Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone in 2018.
Louro’s announcement came at a fundraiser a week ago sponsored by Transitional Services of Long Island and Haven House. “I’m looking for responsible leadership and fiscal responsibility,” he said.
Louro, 52, chief executive of PGP Benefits, of Hauppauge, has never run for office before but has been an active Republican fundraiser. He held a fundraiser for now President-elect Donald Trump in August at his Nissequogue home, as well as an event for Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) headlined by House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).
”He is someone who has grown his business and employs hundreds of people,” said Brookhaven GOP chairman Jesse Garcia. “He certainly has the tools needed to right this sinking ship which is Suffolk County government.”
Vanessa Baird Streeter, Bellone’s spokeswoman, declined to comment.
Bellone, who has yet to announce his own candidacy for re-election, has scheduled a $300-a-head fundraiser Dec. 12.
