The name of Carrie Meek Gallagher, a a well respected veteran environmental offical has surfaced name as a potential contender to replace Peter Scully as $143,000 a year regional director of the state Department of Environmental Conservation, according to several Democratic sources.

Gallagher is currently chief of sustainability for the Suffolk Water Authority and earlier had served as the top environmental official for former Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy. She did not return calls for comment Friday.

The State Department of Environmental Conservation listed the job posting Friday and put in a May 22 deadline for filing an application. Scully is joining the administration of Steve Bellone as a $170,000 a year deputy county executive for administration in charge of sewers.
