Because of superstorm Sandy, Suffolk election officials have extended weekend hours for those who want to apply and vote in person by absentee ballot.

Those wanting to apply for an absentee ballot and vote immediately in person can go to the Suffolk Board of Elections office on Yaphank Avenue in Yaphank until 9 p.m. Friday; from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday; from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

The state board of elections also has extended the deadline for absentee ballots to be received and still count to 13 days after Nov. 6. Normally, the ballots are due within 7 days of Election Day. Ballots still must be postmarked no later than Monday, Nov. 5.

State election officials earlier had extended the deadline for mail-in and faxed requests for absentee ballots from Oct. 30 until Friday.
