Suffolk Legis. Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai) increased her unofficial one-vote lead over Republican challenger Steven Tricarico to five votes Thursday, with 40 percent of absentee ballots counted, elections and party officials said.
County elections officials in Yaphank got through 225 of the about 560 uncounted absentee ballots during a recount that began in midafternoon. Officials are expected to pick up again at 9:30 a.m. Friday.
Lawyers for both sides also have challenged a total of 29 votes which the Republican and Democratic election commissioners will have to consider before the election can be certified. Richard Schaffer, Suffolk Democratic chairman, said 19 of the challenges were made by Republicans, 10 by Democrats.
On election night, Anker led with 5,859 votes to Tircarico's 5,858.
