Voter turnout was so sparse in Suffolk it suggests only the most habitual voters are showing up in off-year elections. Some blame a lack of competitive local races. Credit: Randee Daddona

Election Day turned out only 19.1 percent of Suffolk's voters -- the lowest showing since at least 1995, when the county Board of Elections began to keep digital records.

Michael Dawdziak, a political consultant who works mainly for Republicans, said it is the lowest turnout ever, and he blamed the poor showing on the lack of competitive races for town supervisor and county executive.

The dwindling turnout indicates that almost everyone but the 15.53 percent who constitute Suffolk’s prime voters -- those who vote in every election -- is sitting out off-year elections.
