Suffolk party chairman Walsh, facing charges, to retire

Suffolk Conservative chairman Edward Walsh, who is facing criminal charges in U.S. District Court, will retire Friday as a correction lieutenant at as much as half pay, based on his 25 years with the county.

Records show Walsh made $120,613 last year. He’d be eligible for as much as 50 percent of his three highest years’ salary and overtime. Walsh, 50, will also receive free health insurance in retirement. Before 1988, he’d have had to wait until age 55 to begin collecting.

Jury selection is scheduled for March 15. Walsh, charged with collecting pay while golfing, gambling and politicking, insists he was legitimately serving as a liaison for the county sheriff’s office.
