Suffolk's audit: No errors in voting machine counts

Suffolk elections officials completed their state-mandated 3 percent audit of voting machines and found no errors in the machine counts of Election Day ballots, elections officials said Tuesday.

Ivan Young, an assistant Democratic elections commissioner, said the audit of 42 of the county's 460 machines finished without any finding any mistakes. "Everything ran smoothly," he said.

Republican elections commissioner Wayne Rogers agreed there were no problems with the machine count.

Rep. Tim Bishop (D-Southampton), who on Tuesday led Republican Randy Altschuler by more than 230 votes at the conclusion of the counting of absentee ballots in the 1st Congressional District, said the successful audit means there is little cause for a hand recount of all ballots cast in his race.

Altschuler spokesman Rob Ryan said the campaign was "reviewing all pertinent information . . . to ensure that every legally cast ballot is . . . accurately counted."

Nassau County's 3 percent audit of voting machines is set to continue Wednesday.
