The polls: LI voter turnout about as expected so far

Jay Jacobs, the chairman of the state and Nassau Democratic parties, reports that total turnout in Nassau was about 16 percent by noon. The Suffolk Board of elections said turnout there was 12.6 percent by noon, down slightly from the 13 percent at noon in 2006, the last comparable election.
Jacobs said turnout has been about the same in Democratic North Hempstead as in more Republican parts of Hempstead Town, which would indicate there is little evidence of the feared Republican wave, which some predicted would take out Rep. Carolyn McCarthy.
Rob Ryan, the spokesman for Randy Altschuler who is challenging Rep. Tim Bishop (D-Southampton), said turnout in the First Congressional District was 15 percent to 16 percent by noon, slightly higher than in the rest of the county.
