Tisch won't seek new term as Regents chancellor

Merryl Tisch said Monday she will not seek another term as chancellor of the state Board of Regents, the panel that sets education policy for New York.
Tisch, the board’s public face on the controversial Common Core academic standards, will serve until her term expires on March 31, the last day of the state’s 2015-16 fiscal year. She has been on the board since 1996 and chancellor since 2009.
Tisch told other regents of her decision at their monthly meeting Monday in Albany.
“I will not seek another term as chancellor and I will step down” effective March 31, she told the board. She added that she “will give you the best that I possibly can,” through her remaining tenure.
“It has been an honor to serve with my colleagues,” she said, promising that she would continue to be an “outspoken voice” on education issues.
